Are We Smug?

From Not My God Follow link for complete post and to comment I’ve been thinking a while about an accusation towards atheists that does have a ring of truth: are we smug? My first response is, are we really smugger than a theist who thinks she has friends in high places and will go to heaven when she dies because she’s one of the “good ones”? Maybe that’s flip, but that is how I see it. Sure, I’m an atheist because my critical thin… Continue

Don't pastors' kids make the best atheists?

From Not My God Don’t pastors’ kids make the best atheists? November 19th, 2009 Those of you who read my sample chapter on Janet (which was also published) have read the story of a PK (preacher’s kid) who experienced one of the worst things that could happen to a child. Her father urged her to pray to forgive the man who sexually abused her, something she was not able to do. This was a pivotal moment in her path to atheism. PK Luke… Continue

Kids Today

From Not My God In my search for interviewees for Not My God (the book itself, not just this blog), I went for a diverse crowd, including a diverse group of ages. Kids/teenagers are particularly valuable. Yes, they are the future, all right, but growing up in the information age provides them with an enormous cohort effect. I’ve mentioned that they are more fortunate than I was in that I was all alone as a young atheist, whereas t… Continue

Wow, it’s been almost a year

From Not My God Here in the Not My God penthouse, I’ve realized that I’ve been doing this blog for almost a year. Praise Darwin! I’m acknowledging the milestone a little early since I’ll be in Germany meeting my new nephew soon and probably away from the blog. I’ve certainly learned a lot about the subject matter and gotten a lot to think about through this book project. I conceived Not My God in the first place around Darwin’s 199t… Continue

Why I'm proud, dammit

From Not My God Happy Blasphemy Day, everyone! Why celebrate blasphemy, you ask? It's important to put into to practice the concept that we shouldn't respect religion just because it's religion. It is not exempt from criticism the way so many people seem to think it is. Don't bow down to religion when it treads on you in the name of "respect." Respect has to be earned. Speaking of blasphemy, it was great to see Dawkins on Colbert, talki… Continue

OK, but do we deserve to be hated?

From Not My God Off-topic: why do we often say, “That’s for history to decide”? Why is the opinion/assessment of people in the future more important than ours? Are they better than us? Don’t let future history boss you around! OK, enough stand-up. Not My God functions as an illustration of how atheists are hated in the United States. Depending on where you are in the rest of the world, being an atheist can be no big deal or will… Continue

Eight years later

From Not My God Tomorrow is the eighth anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in history. For many, the events of September Eleventh strengthened their belief in god– for some, in an angry, vengeful god, and for others, a kind, loving god. Others, still, wouldn’t retain their faith in the aftermath of the tragedy. Some of you may be among them. It is probable that Richard Dawkins wrote the God Delusion and started the New Atheis… Continue

As if being a teenager isn’t hard enough

Aye gevalt– Is it September already? Thank Darwin for Facebook. It is proving invaluable in my meeting and schmoozing with other atheists/skeptics. Plus it’s great for meeting cool people everywhere. To any young ‘uns reading this, you have no idea how much the internet has changed things. One thing I see a lot of in this project is atheists who have double, and sometimes even triple, whammies: being an atheist and being gay. Being an atheist and in the bible belt. Being atheist, gay and in th… Continue

My stand-up act at TAM, and more about Mormons

July 23rd, 2009 Hi Diddly Ho Atheisterinos, Andy recorded my act at TAM 7. Here it is. The quality isn’t great (no offense, Andy…I’m grateful to see it before the DVD comes out, so thanks again), but when the DVD of the event comes out, I’ll post the professionally recorded version. TAM stand-up comedy I’m open to constructive criticism, but please go easy:) Not too Simon Cowell-esque. Now onto Not My God stuff. In the past few weeks, I’ve gained a much greater understanding of the unique ch… Continue
